Calum Hall by Nico Quinteros | Numéro Netherlands
There is something about a first trip to a city that stays with you. London had been in my head for years, but I had never been there before. And somehow, the first time I arrived, I arrived with my camera. I think that says a lot about the way I experience places now.
Photography has become almost inseparable from travelling, meeting people and
understanding where I am in my own life.
I met Calum there and we photographed together. Nothing too complicated. London, available light, the streets, his clothes, his body, my camera. I remember being interested in this contrast in him, something masculine and strong but at the same time quiet, melancholic, almost vulnerable. I didn't want to overthink it or turn London into an obvious background. I wanted the city to be there without screaming LONDON. The brick, the concrete, the grey light, the texture of the streets. And Calum inside all of that.
Looking at the photographs now, I think they also carry something about where I was personally at that moment. The last couple of years have been about movement for me.
Leaving Argentina, starting a new life in Amsterdam, trying to find my place again, meeting new people, rebuilding my career in Europe and slowly allowing photography to take up more and more space in my life. Sometimes it is difficult to see your own progress when you're inside it. You're always thinking about the next shoot, the next publication, the next person you want to work with, the email nobody answered. Then suddenly you find yourself walking around London for the first time, about to photograph someone, and you realise: fuck, my life actually moved.
Maybe that's why I feel particularly close to these photographs. They're not about a huge production or a perfect fashion moment. They're simple. A person, a city I didn't know, some beautiful light and that little tension that happens when two people are still discovering each other through the camera. That's usually the place where I find the pictures I care about the most.
Months later, seeing the story published as “Exclusive Editorial by Nico Quinteros” for Numéro Netherlands gave the trip another meaning. They described the images as raw, melancholic and slightly punk, and I smiled when I read it because that's pretty much what London felt like to me that first time, and probably what I was feeling a little bit myself.
I've been taking photographs for many years, but lately I've been thinking less about where I'm supposed to arrive and more about how much photography has already changed the geography of my life. Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Milan, London. People I would never have met. Situations I couldn't have planned. Versions of myself that only existed because at some point I decided to pick up a camera and keep going.
So yes, this is an editorial about Calum. But somewhere inside these photographs there is also the memory of my first London, the excitement of being somewhere new, the uncertainty of building a career far away from where I started, and that very quiet feeling of realising that perhaps I'm growing more than I notice.
And I like having photographs to remind me of that.
